San Fernando Valley Accident Leaves One Dead and Stalls Traffic for Hours
A multi-car accident in the San Fernando Valley resulted in a man being hospitalized and traffic being stalled for four to five miles during rush hour, according to vcstar.com.
The accident occurred December 21 at the top of the Conejo Grade. A bus experiencing mechanical problems stopped in a middle southbound lane on Highway 101. The bus belonged to an adult daycare center in West Hills. The driver was driving to pick up senior citizens at the time of the crash in order to transport them to West Hills. He was waiting for a tow truck at the time of the accident.
The bus was rear-ended by a sedan, which was then rear-ended by a second sedan. A passenger in the first sedan sustained chest injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was admitted for treatment. According to police, the driver of the sedan was driving at an unsafe speed for the conditions – it was raining at the time of the accident.
Rain is blamed for thousands of accidents in the U.S. annually. Rain both makes the asphalt wet, which causes tires to lose traction, and it reduces driver perception. In order to avoid California motor vehicle accidents due to rain, be sure to use extreme caution after a long dry spell – during that time, oil and grease build up on the road over time, which results in extremely slick roads when it finally rains. In the rain, brake earlier and with less force. Try to stay toward the middle of the road to avoid deep puddles. Don’t use cruise control; your car could actually accelerate if it hydroplanes.
